This trip is the first time in years I've travelled without a laptop. I want to go light but I'm not the type that will be happy posting an image without being able to fiddle with it. Things haven't really changed in that regard since Ansel Adams wrote his book "The Print," except now of course it's on the Web and we don't have to sniff those chemicals.
So my recipe for success: iPad + Adapter thingie that plugs an SD card into the iPad + SnapSeed for quick processing + PhotoGene for more detailed editing + SquareSpace for iPad. I'm taking a D7000 with a very limited set of lenses: 17-35 zoom, 35 fixed, 50 fixed. Everything fits in my smallest photo bag. I'm estimating I'm ditching about 15 pounds of gear.
The reason for all this weight-saving zeal is a realization that my lugging equipment around, while reassuring me that I'll be ready for anything, actually was having the opposite effect, making me ready for nothing. I am much less likely to want to take my gear along if it's an ordeal to lug, and much more likely to always have a camera with me if it's not an inconvenience.
